Summary
- Your remote-control content stays between your devices. Your typing, clipboard contents, and commands travel directly between your paired phone or tablet and your computer over your local network. They are never sent to our servers.
- No account, no ads, no tracking. Tappio does not require an account, does not show ads, does not sell personal information, and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- Analytics and diagnostics are optional and off by default. If you turn them on, Tappio sends limited reports about feature usage and errors, identified only by a random ID. You can turn them off at any time.
- You are in control. Email privacy@tappioapp.com to ask a question or request access to or deletion of your information.
Who we are
Tappio is made by Maaya Labs LLC (“Maaya Labs,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a one-person studio based in California, United States. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in connection with the Tappio mobile apps for iPhone and iPad, the Tappio desktop companion apps, Tappio Pro, and the Tappio website (together, “Tappio”).
Maaya Labs is responsible for the personal information described in this policy (the “controller” under data protection laws such as the GDPR). See Contact us for how to reach us.
Data that stays on your devices
Tappio connects your phone or tablet directly to your computer over your local network. To provide the features you use, your devices process and exchange the following information with each other only:
- Pairing and connection: device names, local network addresses, device identifiers, and cryptographic pairing credentials, so your devices can find and trust each other.
- Trackpad, Keyboard, and System Shortcuts: pointer movements, clicks, scrolling, the text you type or dictate, and commands such as lock or sleep.
- Clipboard Sync: the clipboard text you choose to send or receive.
- App Launcher, Media Remote, and Browser Remote: app names and icons, playback status, track information and artwork, and the commands you send.
- Custom Wallpapers: images you choose from your photo library, which are stored only on your device.
We do not have access to this information. Connections between your devices are encrypted and authenticated. Settings, pairing records, and local logs stay on your devices, and some may be included in device backups you control, such as iCloud Backup. Deleting Tappio does not remove all of this data: pairing credentials stored in the iOS Keychain, and the Mac companion’s settings and logs, can remain until you remove them yourself.
Device permissions
Tappio asks for permissions only for the features that need them: Local Network to find and connect to your computer, Camera to scan a pairing QR code, the photo picker to choose a wallpaper, and on your computer, Accessibility and, where needed, Automation to carry out the controls you send. You can change these permissions in your system settings at any time; the related features may stop working if you do.
Optional analytics and diagnostics
To help us improve Tappio, you can choose to share two independent kinds of reports. Both are off by default, and Tappio works fully without them.
- Product analytics: which features are opened or used; onboarding, pairing, and connection outcomes and timing ranges; the platform and app version of the paired device; and paywall, trial, purchase, renewal, and restore outcomes and the plan involved.
- Diagnostics & crashes: predefined error codes and counts of operations that succeeded, failed, or were refused. On iPhone and iPad, this also includes filtered crash reports, which contain technical details such as the Tappio code involved, memory addresses, and processor architecture.
Each report also includes technical context: the time, platform, app and operating-system versions, reporting-library version, and which report types are turned on.
Reports never include what you type or copy, screenshots or screen recordings, photos, web addresses or browsing content, media titles or artwork, names of the apps you control, device names, pairing credentials, payment information, receipts, or transaction identifiers. We do not use session replay, and we do not record individual mouse movements or keystrokes.
How reports are identified
When you turn on reporting, Tappio creates a random Analytics ID for that installation. It is not linked to your name, email address, Apple Account, advertising identifier, or hardware identifiers. Because reports from the same installation share this ID, we treat them as pseudonymous personal information rather than anonymous data. We do not build user profiles or combine reports with information from other sources.
Reports are sent over an encrypted connection to PostHog, our analytics provider, in its EU Cloud region. Tappio disables location lookup for reports, and our PostHog project is configured not to store IP addresses.
Mac companion reports
The Mac companion does not have its own reporting setting. While connected, it follows the choices made on your phone or tablet and sends only the report types that the connected device allows, using its own separate Analytics ID. It stops when you turn reporting off or disconnect. The Mac companion does not upload crash reports.
Purchases
Apple processes all Tappio Pro purchases. We never receive your name, email address, or payment card details. Tappio checks the signed purchase information that Apple provides on your device to unlock Tappio Pro, including for restored and Family Sharing purchases. If you turn on Product analytics, we receive only the plan and outcome of a purchase, never the receipt or transaction identifier. Apple’s handling of your purchase information is described in Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Website, updates, and support
Website and downloads. Our website and downloads are delivered by Cloudflare. Like any web service, Cloudflare processes technical request information, such as your IP address, the page or file requested, the time, and your browser or software version, to deliver content, monitor reliability, and protect against abuse. Our website does not use advertising or analytics trackers. It stores your light or dark theme preference in your browser’s local storage, which you can clear at any time.
Mac updates. The Mac companion automatically checks our release server for new versions using the Sparkle update framework. These checks send ordinary technical request information, such as your IP address and app version, and do not include system profile information.
Support. If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you choose to attach. We use this only to respond and resolve your request. Please do not send passwords, pairing codes, or payment details.
How we use information
We use the limited information we receive only to:
- provide Tappio and the features you request, including unlocking Tappio Pro;
- understand which features are useful, find and fix bugs and crashes, and improve reliability, if you have turned on the relevant reports;
- deliver the website, downloads, and updates securely and prevent abuse;
- respond to your support and privacy requests; and
- comply with legal obligations and protect our legal rights.
We do not use your information for advertising, sell it, or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not make decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Where the GDPR, UK GDPR, or similar laws apply, our legal bases are: your consent for optional analytics and diagnostics, which you can withdraw at any time without affecting earlier processing; performance of our contract with you to provide Tappio, check purchases, and handle support; our legitimate interests in securing and operating our website, downloads, and updates, and answering general inquiries; and legal obligations where applicable. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests.
International transfers
Maaya Labs is based in the United States, and PostHog stores reports in the European Union. Our providers may process information in other countries where they or their subprocessors operate. Where the law requires it, transfers of personal information from the EU, UK, or Switzerland are protected by appropriate safeguards, such as adequacy decisions or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, as described in PostHog’s Data Processing Agreement. Contact us for more information about these safeguards.
Retention and deletion
- Analytics and diagnostics: our retention period is 12 months. You can ask us to delete your reports at any time before then.
- Support emails: kept for as long as needed to resolve your request and follow up on related issues, and then deleted unless we need to keep them for legal reasons.
- Website, download, and update records: kept by Cloudflare for short periods under its own retention practices for delivery, reliability, and security.
- On-device data: kept on your devices until you remove it. Uninstalling alone may leave data behind, so first remove paired computers in Tappio on your iPhone or iPad, and on your Mac also delete the
~/Library/Application Support/Tappiofolder. We cannot access or delete this data remotely.
Turning reporting off stops new reports and discards reports that have not yet been sent, but does not delete reports we have already received. To delete those, email privacy@tappioapp.com and include the Analytics ID shown in Tappio’s reporting settings on your iPhone or iPad. If you also want reports from your Mac deleted, tell us so we can help you locate them. Some information may be kept longer where the law requires it or where needed to establish or defend legal claims; if so, we will tell you why.
Your choices and rights
Change your reporting choices at any time in Tappio on your iPhone or iPad under Settings → Help improve Tappio. The app may invite you to choose after you have successfully connected; dismissing that invitation leaves reporting off. Accepting the Terms of Use does not turn on reporting, and declining reporting never limits Tappio’s features.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information; to restrict or object to its processing; to withdraw consent; and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Residents of California and other U.S. states may have similar rights, including the right to know what we collect and to appeal a decision about their request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
To make a request, email privacy@tappioapp.com. You do not need an account. We may ask for information, such as your Analytics ID, to find the relevant reports and verify the request, and we will respond within the time required by law. We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising, whether or not your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal.
Children
Tappio is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children under 13, or the equivalent minimum age where they live. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it. If you are not old enough to consent to optional reporting where you live, please leave reporting off unless a parent or guardian consents for you.
Security
We protect information with measures including authenticated device pairing, encrypted connections between your devices, encrypted transmission of reports, and strict limits on what reports can contain. No device, network, or service is completely secure, so please keep your devices up to date and pair only devices you trust.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Tappio or the law changes. We will post the updated policy on this page and change the “Last updated” date. If we make material changes, we will provide additional notice, such as in the app. If a change requires your consent, we will ask for it before the change applies to you.
